In To Dinner

Sometimes we like to go out and eat, but unless the children are all on school holidays, there's often a problem going out.  Yash and I have one activity we love to do with the kids for a change - we often like to 'eat in.'  Meaning that yes, we eat at home as usual.  But instead of us (or me!) cooking the food, we buy it outside and bring it home and eat it.

There is a south Indian dish, dosa with samber, which we can buy very cheap.  It's very tasty and the kids love it.  The dosa is a kind of light south Indian bread and the samber, a spice lentil soup, is gorgeous.  The trouble is, I feel that the samber I make at home is far superior to the takeaway food.  I can't make dosas, though.  That is an acquired skill.  The tawa (pan) required to make dosas is a flat shape, whereas our tawa for making chapatis (the unleavened bread of north India) seems to be more convex.

The mughlai cuisine of north India is a very nice takeaway alternative.  We are a vegetarian family, but we love naan bread and we can consume paneer (cheese) curry as an alternative to meat curry.

Home delivery pizza is a huge favourite with the children.  It is however, hideously expensive as we are a large family.  The same with McDonalds, the burger house.  It has become rather expensive lately to eat there.  So if I go shopping without the kids, or just one child, I often buy McDonalds food and bring it home.  If you look at the cost of five glasses of cola in McDonalds, it works out much more expensive having your food in the shop and drinking there too.  It works out more economic to eat at home and make tea or buy cola from the local shop.  I suppose again, that's because of the size of my family.

As a takeaway choice, Indian food is more economic for us, and no way less enjoyable than other food.

The Tale of One Kitty

The cat..... Those who know me already might say that they didn't know I had a cat.  I didn't, you know! Our dog, Duggu is such a handful, I didn't think we could take on another pet. But a few months ago, a beautiful cat (whom we eventually named Puggle)  arrived. She's not really ours..... Nope! She's someone else's cat who just went on what the Aussies might call a walkabout. My younger daughter Riya found her on the roof of our house, a pretty calico (three-coloured) cat. Riya was instantly smitten. Some milk was fed to the little creature and the deal was sealed.
